Tips for dealing with aggressive drivers

Anyone who has been behind the wheel of a motor vehicle knows that aggressive drivers are everywhere. Unfortunately, road rage can be a very dangerous thing.

According to the Traffic Safety, aggressive driving contributes to over half of all traffic fatalities.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) defines aggressive driving as operating a motor vehicle “in a manner that endangers or is likely to endanger persons or property.”

Examples of aggressive driving include:

  • Speeding
  • Tailgating
  • Racing
  • Driving slowly in the passing lane
  • Cutting off other drivers
  • Dangerous passing
  • Failing to signal a turn
  • Honking or gesturing at another driver

Given the right circumstances, even the calmest drivers can experience road rage. Follow these tips to help you deal with aggressive drivers – and hopefully avoid an accident with one:

  • Move out of the way: Drivers usually get aggressive for a reason – when another driver is driving “too slowly”, for example. If another driver is tailgating you or exhibiting other aggressive behavior, get out of the way. Allow him or her to pass.
  • Don’t provoke the driver: Don’t honk, don’t gesture, don’t flash your lights, and don’t make eye contact. This could lead to a dangerous confrontation. Instead, stay calm, make rational decisions, and let the other driver move on.
  • Lock your doors: In the event that an encounter with an aggressive driver escalates to a confrontation, make sure your doors are locked. Drive to a safe location and call the police.

When confronted with an aggressive driver, it is best to quite literally take the high road. Additionally, try to avoid getting too stressed out yourself while driving. Stay calm, obey traffic laws, and respect other drivers with whom you share the road.
