Staying Safe On The Roads This Labor Day Weekend
Written by Jay M. Kelley III in Accident & Injury on August 28, 2017
Labor Day is just around the corner. For many individuals and families, it means planning one last summer outing. Many motorists will be hitting the road, enjoying the last 3-day weekend of the summer.
In 2016, Labor Day was September 6th. According to the Ohio Department Of Public Safety, there were more injuries and deaths due to car accidents in Ohio in September than in any other month.
Did Labor Day traffic have anything to do with the increase in accidents? While we cannot be certain that it did, it is wise to be extra cautious on the roads this weekend.
Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Don’t drink and drive: There are more options than ever to avoid drunk driving. Assign a designated driver; Call a cab; Use rideshare apps like Uber or Lyft; Use public transportation; Call a friend or family member to pick you up. There is truly no excuse for drinking and driving.
- Avoid distracted driving: It is wise to avoid distracted driving at all times. Using your phone while driving and engaging in other forms of distracted driving puts you and other motorists at risk. Use your phone before or after – not during – your trip.
- Practice defensive driving: Defensive driving involves planning for the unexpected while driving and being prepared to react to other motorists. When you practice defensive driving, you are better prepared to respond to other drivers’ mistakes and avoid getting into an accident yourself.
Remember: An accident can happen anytime, anywhere. Implement these safe driving techniques every day of the year.
