On October 6, 20 people were killed in a horrific limousine accident in upstate New York. All 18 passengers, including the driver, and two pedestrians lost their lives in the accident. It is the deadliest traffic accident in the U.S. in nearly 10 years.

While the cause of the accident is still unclear, we know that certain warning signs were missed. The limousine involved in the accident failed safety inspections. Additionally, the driver of the limo did not have the proper driver’s license to operate a limousine.

Additionally, before the ride began, one of the passengers sent her mother a message complaining about the poor condition of the vehicle.

Since the deadly crash in New York, many people have begun to wonder about their safety as passengers in a rental limousine.

While limousine crashes are relatively rare, this recent catastrophic accident raises questions in the minds of those looking to rent a limousine, van or other similar vehicle.

So, are limousines and other rental vehicles safe?

There are certain things you can do, as a limousine renter/passenger: Check online reviews of the company. Research the company to determine if the vehicle is registered and has been inspected. Confirm with the rental company your choice of car, to avoid a last-minute replacement vehicle.

It is important to remember that an accident can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time.

If you are the driver of a vehicle, you can practice safe driving by paying attention to the road, avoiding speeding, and avoiding distracted driving.

Even if you are the passenger of a vehicle, you still play a role in roadway safety. If a rental vehicle doesn’t look safe, don’t get in. If the driver is engaging in drunk or reckless driving, call 911.

Use common sense, and remember, if something doesn’t seem right, proceed with caution.
