Dangerous Drop-Side Cribs

Supporting families whose children have been injured by unsafe baby cribs

All parents want to protect their children from the dangers of the world and should be confident their baby will be safe when they lay them down to sleep. Unfortunately, not all baby cribs are safe for our children. In 2016, there were 11,300 emergency department-treated injuries from cribs/mattresses to children under the age of five, reported by the Consumer Product Safety Commision.

Due to improper design or a manufacturer defect, a drop-side crib can cause entrapment of the child and lead to strangulation or suffocation.

If your child has been injured or died due to an unsafe baby crib, those responsible need to be held accountable. After an injury due to a dangerous baby crib, call Elk & Elk at 1-800-ELK-OHIO to schedule your free consultation.

New Federal Requirements for a Safer Generation of Cribs

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission made the requirements for baby cribs even more strict after it recalled more than 11 million cribs and bassinets, in 2011. Beginning June 28, 2011, all cribs sold in the United States must meet new federal requirements.

5 New Federal Requirements

  1. Drop-side cribs cannot be made or sold; immobilizers and repair kits not allowed
  2. Wood slats must be made of stronger woods to prevent breakage
  3. Crib hardware must have anti-loosening devices to keep it from coming loose or falling off
  4. Mattress supports must be more durable
  5. Safety testing must be more rigorous

Despite these actions, babies are still injured and even killed. If your child was injured or disabled as a result of an unsafe baby crib, you could be entitled to compensation.

Children with serious crib injuries could require a lifetime of medical care or therapy. We vigorously pursue the benefits you deserve to ensure that your child has the necessary care for life.
