risperdalWhat is Risperdal?

Risperidone is a potent atypical anti-psychotic drug marketed by Johnson & Johnson under the trade name Risperdal. It is mainly used to treat schizophrenia (including adolescent schizophrenia), schizoaffective disorder, the mixed and manic states associated with bipolar disorder, and irritability in people with autism. However, Risperdal has also been prescribed for unapproved uses, sometimes resulting in serious consequences. Johnson & Johnson was recently forced to pay $181 million in penalties in connection with off-label marketing of Risperdal.

Severe side effects linked to Risperdal

Risperdal may cause Hyperprolactinemia, which significantly increases levels of prolactin, a hormone that the body normally releases to stimulate breast growth and milk production in women. However, several studies have linked Risperdal to gynecomastia, which causes the enlargement of breast tissue and even lactation in males. This condition is usually permanent and has been seen in boys who took Risperdal. To correct the condition, boys with Risperdal-associated gynecomastia have needed to undergo breast-reduction surgery or even mastectomy. Although gynecomastia is non-cancerous, the growth of male breasts can cause severe embarrassment and lasting psychological and social harm. Side effects associated with Risperdal include:

  • Gynecomstia (growth of male breasts, which may be painful or tender)
  • Galactorrhea (production of milk from breasts)
  • Diabetes, high blood sugar (hyperglycemia)
  • Bone loss (demineralization)
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Tardive dyskinesia (involuntary movement disorder)
  • Weight gain (clinically significant)
  • Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS)
  • Heart problems – including heart attack and irregular heart rhythm
  • Suicide
  • Pancreatitis
  • Increased risk of stroke or death in elderly people with dementia
  • Other serious diseases and health conditions
