can calculate justice

What is an arm worth?

How about a leg? How much money would adequately compensate you for not being able to work again for the rest of your life? Who can calculate the price of paralysis; of losing the life of a loved one?

These are difficult questions and may seem crass in light of the sheer emotional duress under which people find themselves in the wake of a debilitating accident or untimely death of a loved one. But the reality of any disaster – whether a medical mistake, a birth injury, a motor vehicle accident or any type of preventable catastrophe – is that it costs money to recover – physically, mentally and financially.

At Elk & Elk Co. Ltd. we hire some of the brightest financial minds in existence. When you suffer an injury, it not only costs you pain and suffering. It costs you money in the emergency room. Prescription medication is far from free and time lost at work means finances you may never have the opportunity to earn again.

For the personal injury victim, these odds may make recovery seem impossible. But with the right research and calculation to back up a solid legal strategy, putting the pain of an injury behind you and having your life put back on track is a reality. That’s why Elk & Elk employs accountants and economists. These individual help victims get the compensation they are entitled to.

The economics of injury: A chat with Art Elk about the firm’s use of accountants

“There’s a lot involved in the economics of a case,” said Elk & Elk’s managing partner Arthur Elk. “In these big injury cases, where there’s a lot of economic damage to the client, we will actually hire economists and these economists will take into consideration all of the factors.”

For example, Elk said, if a client suffers a paralyzing injury as a result of someone else’s negligence, economic damages that client likely will incur may include medical care in and out of the hospital, medication, wheelchairs, accessibility modifications to the home and lost wages for the rest of his or her life, just to name a few.

Elk said, despite some of the multi-million-dollar settlements and verdicts the firm has won for its clients, no one profits in an injury case.

“Nobody’s looking to make a profit on this kind of case,” he said. “What amount of money would you want to be in a wheelchair for the rest of your life? There’s no amount of money that could ever compensate you for that.”

He added that Elk & Elk Co. Ltd. simply tries “to make sure that our clients are protected and that their families are protected and that they’re adequately compensated so that they can deal with their injuries and live out their lives with some respectability and dignity.”
