New study provides more evidence NuvaRing® birth control is unsafe

NuvaRing

A new study provides further evidence that the hormonal birth control device NuvaRing® may increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and other blood clots in women who use the device.

NuvaRing is an Etonogestrel and Ethinyl estradiol hormonal birth control device that was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2001. Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed contending that manufacturers may have known about the health dangers associated with the once-a-month birth control ring but failed to adequately warn the public.

According to a new study released May 10, 2012, in the British Medical Journal, women using NuvaRing face a 6.5 times increased risk of venous thrombosis compared to women taking no birth control pill, and roughly double the risk compared to women using oral birth control pills. In one of the first large-scale studies evaluating the risk of deep vein thrombosis from NuvaRing, researchers gathered data from more than 1.6 million Danish women between the ages of 15 and 49 between 2001 and 2010. The women were all non-pregnant and without cancer or any prior history of blood clots or thrombotic disease.

This is not the first report linking the birth control device with a higher risk of blood clots. In October 2011, a study by the FDA found that women who used NuvaRing were 56% more likely to suffer blood clots or venous thromboembolic events.
