In one study published in The World Journal of Hernias and Abdominal Wall Surgery, researchers investigated hernia operations in which AlloDerm was used. They found several cases in which patients’ hernias recurred, requiring corrective surgery. Serum formation near the surgery site was another complication which caused pain for patients and many of those studied also experienced the AlloDerm patch coming undone where it was stitched to the site.

These and other potentially deadly hernia patch failures led the researchers in this particular study to conclude: “Further design improvements are required…” and that “Surgeons should be aware of these potential complications prior to the selection of either of these products and the patient should be informed and educated accordingly.”
