Lipitor Warning

Elk & Elk's drug attorneys are representing clients who are taking Lipitor® and have developed Type 2 Diabetes

The drug recall attorneys of Elk & Elk are investigating cases involving Pfizer’s Lipitor, a widely prescribed cholesterol-lowering statin drug that blocks the production of cholesterol in the body. Liptior has been linked to an increased risk of Type 2 Diabetes in women.

lipitorThe drug was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1996. By 2009, the FDA issued new prescribing guidelines for themedication due to the increased risk of muscular damage when using the product. In 2011, additional warnings were placed on the drug because of possible liver damage associated with use. In January 2012, a study found that women, especially those who were post-menopausal, had a significant increase in the chance of getting Type 2 Diabetes when using the product. This led the FDA to order another change to warning labels on the drug indicating an increased risk of diabetes.

Lipitor dosage may increase Type 2 Diabetes risk

A woman’s risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes increases with Lipitor dosage levels.

How do you know if you have Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 Diabetes interferes with the way your body metabolizes sugar. In Type 2 diabetics, your body either ignores insulin (the hormone that extracts sugar from the bloodstream and transfers it to cells), or it doesn’t produce enough insulin to maintain normal glucose levels. Signs and symptoms of Lipitor-induced Type 2 Diabetes may include:

  • Increased thirst and frequent urination
  • Increased hunger
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing sores or frequent infections
  • Areas of darkened skin

What other risks are associated with taking Lipitor?

Besides Type 2 Diabetes, the most common, serious side effects of Lipitor are:

  • Stomach ache, often associated with excessive cramping and lack of bowel movement
  • Muscular pain, especially in the joint areas
  • Increased pressure in the eyes
  • Improper liver function, causing liver damage
  • Kidney damage or failure
  • Memory loss
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Kidney stones
  • Abnormal heart rhythms
